Chapter Eleven
Spot on six o’clock the next evening, Brayden stood at the doors of Barton-Court House holding Alice’s hand. He looked down at her and raised his eyebrows; it was time to meet Elisabeth and he knew she had been dreading it ever since the day Bennett interviewed.
Alice also knew that look and she knew what the expectation was, she had been living at Waldorf Manor under Brayden James as her father long enough to know that even though she’d not previously been in that specific situation, anything less than courteous conversation and more than a mild effort was required of her. Aside from the fact he had made it abundantly clear in at least two previous conversations.
Sullivan opened the double doors and stepped aside. He had been rather intrigued after overhearing Bennett and Brayden speaking about Alice’s ‘real age’. The new young butler could have sworn the girl was ten. She certainly looked and acted the part. Either way, Bennett created his own similar situation with Elisabeth and regardless of the fact it was quite unusual, Sullivan was a happily paid and well treated employee who had been trained to blindly accept his employer’s lifestyle without judgment. He was there to be a butler and to support any family and guests under Barton-Court House without question. That included the nineteen-year-old girl who had just moved in with Bennett under strictly platonic and rather corrective stipulations. Sullivan thought he had heard what sounded like Elisabeth being threatened with a trip across Bennett’s knee just before Brayden and Alice arrived and little did Sullivan know, she had already experienced something very similar earlier that day.
Bennett and Elisabeth were both waiting in the foyer when Brayden and Alice fully entered. Elisabeth stood rather demurely beside Bennett with her hands folded in front of her. Bennett stepped forward to shake Brayden’s hand as he always did, as soon as their coats were taken.
Short hellos were exchanged between the two best friends and then attention was promptly turned to Alice, who gave the usual small curtsey to Bennett and then she stepped forward to kiss his cheek.
“Good evening, Uncle Bennett,” Alice said, in her sweetest, most charming voice.
Bennett looked at Brayden, not ever in the nine months he’d known Alice hearing such a tone from her; Alice was definitely adorable and sweet, but her voice hadn’t ever been that sweet sounding. Brayden kept a straight face and cleared his throat. His daughter was trying to be blatantly obedient to intimidate Elisabeth and he knew it.
“Elisabeth,” Bennett called, his eyes still on Brayden.
Elisabeth immediately stepped forward so that she was beside Bennett.
“Say hello to Mr. James and my niece, Alice,” Bennett said, looking at his guests.
“Good evening, Sir,” Elisabeth said, and gave a small curtsey to Brayden and then stepped forward to kiss both of his cheeks. Brayden bent down to reciprocate the very normal European greeting.
“Hello Elisabeth, it’s lovely to see you again,” he said, smiling at the girl. She was well groomed, properly dressed, charming.
